Why these numbers are defensible
$50/hr is BELOW the Glassdoor 2025 US median for senior-QA contractors ($75-120/hr). We deliberately err low so the value-claim cannot be called inflated.
Per-run hours come from a single, public formula in jankplugin/lib/value.js: setup_min + findings × per_finding_min + personas × per_persona_min + flows × per_flow_min + subpages × per_subpage_min + links × per_link_min + mobile × per_mobile_min + report_write_min. Every constant has a defensibility cheat-sheet in ROI_CALCULATOR.md: 10 min/finding (industry mean for write-up + repro + fix routing), 30 min/persona session (real persona-feedback sessions take 20-40 min), etc.
All constants are environment-overridable (JANK_HOURLY_USD, JANK_PER_FINDING_MIN, etc.). If you want a more conservative or aggressive frame, override and the calculator still works.
Cumulative tally is real, not projected — every plugin run writes to ~/.config/jank/usage.json and (if JANK_EMAIL is set) mirrors to Firestore. You can pull your team's actual cumulative total at any time. View stats →
